Common excuses I hear as to why people avoid trying Yoga
One of the reasons why I became a yoga teacher was because I had first hand experience of some of the many benefits yoga has to offer and I wanted to share these with other people.
Yoga has helped me deal with anxiety issues, made me stronger, it has also boosted my performance in other sports and helped reduce injuries.
I hear a number of reasons why people don’t try yoga. Many of these aren’t reasons to avoid yoga at all, it is quite the opposite. They tend to be many examples as to why they would benefit from attending a yoga class. Really there are no excuses not to try yoga.
Below I provide an answer to the top reasons I hear why people don’t try yoga!
#1 – I’m not flexible enough
“Flexibility is a product of yoga it is not prerequisite”
There is so much more to yoga than being flexible. In a class you will also work on strength, balance, stamina and I like to mix in mobility work too.
But If you think your not bendy enough, you would benefit from yoga, which will help improve your flexibility. There are always modifications to poses to suit each person, plus a teacher on hand to help with alignments.
#2 – Yogas is for girls
This is not the case. There are so many famous male athletes, musicians and actors that practice yoga. To name but a few, The All Blacks, Robert Downey JR, David Beckham, Adam Levine Ryan Gosling, even 50cent has given it go.

#3 – I don’t want to join a cult
The disclaimers you’re asked to sign when you join a class are not signing you up to a cult!
Although Sanskrit words may be used in some classes it doesn’t mean you have to convert or become religious.
If there’s omming in your class and it’s not for you then don’t do it. Yoga is always about your practice and doing what’s right for you.
If you’ve tried a class and you weren’t a fan then don’t let it put you off yoga for life. There are so many options out there, you’ll be sure to find a teacher who’s style suits you.
#4 – I want a proper work out
There are so many different variations of yoga. No matter what type of work you want there will be a yoga class to suit, whether you want a restorative practice or one that will have you sweating and muscles shaking.
Try a few chaturanga’s and some yogi sit ups and then tell me it’s not a proper work out!
#5 I don’t have the time
There are 168 hours in a week so dedicating 1 hour to a yoga practice is nothing. If you feel like you’re too busy it’s likely that you’re in stressed environment and would benefit from a hour of releasing tension and calming the mind. It’s not an act on selfishness to take some time out and do something for you!
Most yoga classes are an hour long so just give it a go! If you don’t like it what have you lost?
